There is some good news coming from the Zambian literature front. The Guardian Newspaper in the United Kingdom has released its list of the best books of 2017. Our very own Kayo Chingonyi’s poetry collection Kumukanda has made the list. The newspaper asks accomplished writers to select their favourite book of 2017. Kayo’s book was chosen by best seller Mark Haddon the author of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time (the book has a long list of accolades by the way). Mark said, “I have fallen in love with poetry again.” Kayo is one of seven African authors on the list.

Kayo Chingonyi was born in Zambia in 1987 and moved to the UK in 1993.  Kayo Chingonyi is a fellow of the Complete Works programme for diversity and quality in British Poetry and the author of two pamphlets, Some Bright Elegance (Salt, 2012) and The Colour of James Brown’s Scream (Akashic, 2016). His first full-length collection, Kumukanda, was published in June 2017 by Chatto & Windus. He made the shortlist of Brunel International African Poetry Prize in 2017.
